ISRO Scientist N Valarmathi, known for her voice in rocket countdown launches, died on Saturday evening due to a heart attack in Chennai, says reports. She was the long time voice behind Indian Space and Research Organisation”s missions” countdown including Chandrayaan-3, which turned out to be her final one.
“The voice of Valarmathi Madam will not be there for the countdowns of future missions of ISRO from Sriharikotta”, said former ISRO Director of Materials & Rocket Manufacturing expert Dr. P V Venkitakrishnan on X (formerly Twitter).
“Chandrayan 3 was her final countdown announcement. An unexpected demise . Feel so sad. Pranams!”, Mr Venkitakrishnan expressed his condolences on Saturday.

She was born in Tamil Nadu”s Ariyalur on July 31 1959, and was studied in Government College of Technology Coimbatore. She did her Masters in Electronics and Communications from Anna University.
She has been working with the ISRO since 1984 and involved in many missions including Insat 2A, IRS IC, IRS ID, TES.
Ms Valarmathi was the project director of RISAT-1 – India”s first indigenously – developed Radar Imaging Satellite. RISAT-1 was successfully launched in April 2012.
She is also the first person to receive Abdul Kalam Award, instituted by Government of Tamil Nadu in honour of the former president Abdul Kalam in 2015.
On August 23, India became the first country to land on the south pole of the Moon as Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the lunar surface. It is also the fourth country – after the US, China, and Russia – to have successfully landed on the Moon’s surface.
