Kolkata: West Bengal has become India’s highest animal protein producer Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said citing Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024. Sharing the news on social media on Monday, December 16, TMC supremo added that Bengal has overtaken large state of Uttar Pradesh and Central government has acknowledged and appreciated the State in the public domain.

Taking to X, Banerjee wrote: “As per GOI’s just published Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024, Bengal is now country’s highest producer of meat, contributing 12.62% of the national output.”

Continuing further TMC chief stated that the State has made tremendous growth rate in the milk production and poultry section. In milk production, West Bengal has recorded the highest Annual Growth Rate in the country i.e., 9.76% against the national average of 3.78% and in the poultry sector, the annual growth rate in egg production is 18.07% as against the national average of 3.18%, CM has said.

“All these achievements are testaments to our innovative policies and programmes and indicate the robust strength of our farmers and producers,” Banerjee added.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in association with State Animal Husbandry Departments, plays a vital role in collecting comprehensive data on livestock demographics and trends. The Animal Husbandry Statistics (AHS) division is responsible for the formulation of statistics through the schemes such as Livestock Census and Integrated Sample Survey (ISS).  The ISS is conducted for the period from  March 1, 2023 to February 29,  2024.  Published annually on the National Milk Day, November 26,  the Animal Husbandry Statistics is an important document that offers valuable insights into livestock and dairy sector trends.

As per the statistics, India’s total milk production for 2023-24 is estimated at 239.30 million tonnes, a 3.78% increase over 2022-23. The total
al egg production in the country is estimated at 142.77 billion numbers, reflecting a 3.18% increase from 2022-23. Similarly, the total meat production for 2023-24 is estimated at 10.25 million tonnes, a 4.95% increase from 2022-23. Also, the total Wool production in the country is estimated as 33.69 million kg, 0.22% increase from the last year.
