A 22-year-old woman has been arrested for throwing acid on her childhood friend in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur around 10:30 pm on Sunday. The horrifying incident took place in Awadhpuri Colony under the Gaurighat police station jurisdiction. The victim, 21-year-old Shraddha Das, suffered severe burns and is currently battling for recovery in a private hospital.

According to officials, the accused, Ishita Sahu, her estranged friend, came to her house after years and lured Shraddha outside her home under the guise of offering a surprise. Moments after a brief conversation, she attacked Shraddha with acid as the latter turned to go back inside.

Neighbours and her mother, alerted by her screams, rushed to her aid and attempted to wash off the acid before rushing her to the hospital. Doctors have reported that Shraddha sustained nearly 50% burns, and though critical, her condition is currently stable.

Initial investigations have revealed that Ishita, who had once been a close childhood friend of Shraddha, was deeply resentful of her success. Shraddha had recently secured a job, purchased a new phone, and was preparing to move to Bengal with her family, developments that, police say, provoked jealousy in the accused.

Family members of the victim allege that Ishita’s mother was aware of her daughter’s mental health issues and may have played a role in the attack.

They further claim that Ishita had been upset after a video featuring Shraddha with a mutual male friend went viral, which reportedly intensified her insecurities since they had a fight one month ago, and Shraddha stopped talking to her.

In a recent development, according to the Free Press Journal, police confirmed that Ishita executed the plan with the help of an accomplice, Ansh Sharma.

Investigators revealed that the duo procured acid using forged documents, including fake seals and letterheads from a fictitious college. Ansh impersonated a professor while convincing the shopkeeper to sell the acid, highlighting the premeditated and calculated nature of the assault.

Both Ishita and Ansh Sharma have been arrested. Police are also on the lookout for Ishita’s parents, who have reportedly gone into hiding following the attack.

An FIR has been filed under sections related to attempted murder and acid attack, and further inquiries are underway to trace all individuals connected to the case.
