Kerala: A new political party with a pro-BJP stance has been launched in Kottayam under the name, Kerala Farmers Federation. The party is led by George J. Mathew, the former chairman of the Kerala Congress. This initiative is seen as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to attract more Christian voters from the region by aligning with a BJP-oriented political platform.
The party’s first conference, scheduled to be held today, will be inaugurated by Cardinal Mar George Alencherry. BDJS State President Thushar Vellapally is also expected to attend the event.

The Kerala Farmers Federation (KeFF) is a non-profit, self-help organization established in 2017, dedicated to uniting and empowering farmers across Kerala. This organization will be transformed into a political party now. Earlier, the National Progressive Party (NPP), was formed by disgruntled leaders of Kerala Congress, had a similar agenda to that of KeFF; however, they were unable to bring about major political change in the region.
Being unable to build a consistent vote bank in the state, the saffron party is aware of the peculiar political landscape in Kerala, which is dominated by the CPI(M) and Congress, who have so far successfully divided the majority Hindu votes between them. With the demographic equation in the state, it is quite hard for the party to come back to power.

Thus, Christians, who form around 18 percent of Kerala’s total population, are crucial for the party to gain dominance in the state, and hence this new move could be yet another attempt to woo the Christian community. With the new party, it could be seen as an effort by the saffron party to bridge the gap as well as to consolidate traditional Christian votes.
