Karnataka: An FIR has been filed against Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna and four others following disturbing allegations by a 40-year-old woman who accused them of gang rape, urinating on her face, injecting her with a deadly virus, and threatening her life. This is the second time Munirathna has faced rape accusations.

The woman, a BJP worker, filed a complaint at the RMC Yard police station on Tuesday, prompting authorities to register the FIR the next day.

Questioning the BJP, the Congress said, “MLA Munirathna is said to be very close to Narendra Modi. It is a rumour from Karnataka to Delhi that Munirathna is one of those special people whom Narendra Modi completely trusts.” The opposition party also demanded strict action against the MLA and asked, “Has being close to Narendra Modi given Muniratna the license to do anything?”

According to police officials, the case includes charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376D (gang rape), 270 (act likely to spread infection), 323 (causing hurt), 354 (assault on a woman), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman).

Allegations of Gang-Rape, Urination, Threats

In her complaint, the woman alleged that on June 11, 2023, two men, identified as Vasantha and Kamal, misled her into visiting MLA Munirathna’s office in Mathikere, promising help in clearing several criminal cases allegedly filed against her at his behest. Once at the office, she was allegedly stripped by Munirathna’s associates, Vasantha and Channakeshawa, who threatened to kill her son if she resisted.

She claimed that the MLA then ordered the men to rape her while he urinated on her face.

The woman further alleged that Munirathna injected her with an unknown substance during the assault and warned her of dire consequences if she spoke out. In January 2024, she was hospitalised and diagnosed with an incurable virus, which she believes was caused by the injection. She did not specify the nature of the virus in the FIR, but linked it directly to the alleged attack.

The woman said she remained silent out of fear for her and her family’s lives. However, after a suicide attempt on May 19, which she survived, she decided to file a police complaint. “I had consumed pills, intending to end my life. But when I survived, I felt I needed to tell the truth,” she reportedly told police investigators.

The complainant, an active BJP worker, also alleged that Munirathna harboured a longstanding grudge against her due to her political activities within the party. She claimed the MLA used his influence to have false criminal cases registered against her at both Peenya and RMC Yard police stations.

Prior Rape Allegation

This is not the first time Munirathna, the current MLA from Rajarajeshwari Nagar, has faced such serious allegations. In September 2024, another 40-year-old woman accused him of repeatedly raping her between 2020 and 2022. That complaint also included explosive claims that Munirathna forced her to participate in criminal conspiracies, including honey-trapping politicians using HIV-infected women.

In October 2024, Munirathna was granted conditional bail by the Special court of sessions for criminal cases in rape case.

The MLA has also previously been named in cases involving blackmail, harassment, bribery, casteist abuse, and hate speech. As of Thursday morning, Munirathna has not issued an official response to the latest allegations.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time.
