'No Marriage': Puthuppadi Muslim Mahallu Boycott Drug Users

Kozhikode, Kerala: The Muslim Mahallu committees in Puthuppadi Grama Panchayat Thamarassery have taken a tough stand against the drug users in the locality by taking crucial decisions regarding narcotics.

The committees from different Mahallu in the Panchayat, consisting of several groups of the Muslim community, decided not to cooperate with the wedding of those who are using drugs. The Mahallu will not support their marriage registration and other religious and customary requirements. Different groups, including Sunnis, Mujahids and Jamaat-e-Islami, participated in the meeting that took the decision in the context of rising drug cases from the state.

The committee took the issue seriously after the panchayat recently witnessed two murders under the influence of narcotics. Kerala in the last two months saw two gruesome murders, both of which came under the Puthuppadi Panchayat limits.

In January, a 25-year-old man, Ashik, murdered his mother, Subaida Kayikkal. The son reportedly claimed that he killed his mother as ‘punishment for birthing hi. It was reported that Ashik was addicted to drugs and had undergone treatment at various de-addiction canters.

In another case which occurred in Puthuppadi this month, a 25-year-old man, reportedly a friend of Ashik, stabbed his wife to death and attacked her parents. Though the police have not confirmed this, some sources have claimed that Yasir was also a drug addict. In addition, there have been multiple similar cases from across the state in recent days.

However, along with taking a strict stand against drug users, the Mahallu committees have also decided to carry out extensive campaign against the social menace. The committee declared full support for the police and the government in their fight against drug peddlers and users, and decided to conduct workshops on proper parenting.
