No meat, No Fish And Eggs In Keralam Lok Bhavan: Governor Om Prakash Mathur Orders New Kitchen Rules

Keralam’s newly appointed Governor, Om Prakash Mathur, has issued a directive banning the preparation of meat, fish, and eggs in the official Lok Bhavan kitchen.

The decision marks a sharp departure from the tenure of his predecessor, Rajendra Arlekar, during which non-vegetarian dishes, including local fish delicacies, were regularly prepared and served.

The transition to a strictly vegetarian kitchen has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Congress MP K.C. Venugopal strongly condemned the directive, calling it an unnecessary intrusion into individual food choices and an affront to the diverse cultural fabric and culinary traditions of Keralam.

As public debate intensified over the directive, the Governor’s office stepped in to clarify the scope of the new rules, emphasizing that the restriction does not apply to all staff members.

The ban on cooking meat, fish, and eggs applies exclusively to the official Lok Bhavan kitchen. The vegetarian-only menu is mandatory only for meals prepared for Governor Mathur, his personal staff, specific high-ranking officials, and official state guests.

The Governor’s office explicitly stated that general employees are under no food restrictions. Staff members remain entirely free to bring non-vegetarian food from home or eat at external establishments.

Officials noted that the adjustment was made simply to align the state facility’s kitchen with Governor Mathur’s personal lifestyle as a strict vegetarian.
