Kottakkal, Kerala: Sir Syed Day and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Kerala Alumni Gathering will be held in Kottakkal on October 20. Sir Syed Day is observed in memory of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University and a pioneering educational reformer. The event is being organised by the State Committee of the AMU Old Students Association, Kerala (AMUOSAK), and will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. at Kottakkal Peace Public School.

Kerala Minority Welfare Minister V. Abdurahiman will inaugurate the event as the chief guest. Prof. Shahul Hameed, Director of the AMU Malappuram Centre, will deliver the Sir Syed Memorial Lecture.

Prominent personalities including former Minister P.K. Abdurabb, Prof. Abid Hussain Thangal, MLA, Mappilakala Academy Chairman Dr. Hussain Randathani, social activist and singer Afsal Ali K.T., Dr. P.A. Kabeer of Almas Hospital, Jouhar M. of Peace Public School, and Muhammad Vaseel, former AMUSU cabinet member, will participate in various sessions throughout the day.

A Sir Syed Merit Award Ceremony will also be held to honour the children of Aligarians (AMU alumni) who have secured admission to nationally reputed institutions for the 2024–25 academic year.

Sir Syed Day is celebrated annually to honour Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817–1898). Normally observed on October 17, his birth anniversary, the day highlights his contributions to modern education and social awakening during the 19th century. Through the establishment of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, later AMU, he laid the foundation for a progressive, educated community. Sir Syed Day, celebrated across the globe by the alumni of the historic institution inspires reflection on his enduring legacy of education, reform, and unity.
