Edited by Fathimathu Shana

Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress chose to field candidates from the Other Backward Class (OBC) from Gujarat’s Pathan Lok Sabha constituency, the Thakors. While the BJP gave ticket to the sitting MP Bharat Singh Dabhi Thakor, Congress gave ticket to Chandanji Thakor for the ongoing Lok Sabha election.

Chandanji Thakor is the former MLA of Siddhapur. He is the president of Patan Thakor Samaj. Congress hopes to win by fielding a leading figure from the constituency’s leading community. The Sujanipur born Chandanji has been associated to Congress for a long time. Though his education level is only up to 10th grade, he is a farmer and builder by profession. He contested in the Gujarat Assembly election in 2017, as a Congress candidate and won the seat against BJP’s Jayanarayan Vyas. He served as the Siddhapur MLA from 2017 to 2022.

Upon receiving the ticket for the Lok Sabha election, Chandanji said that Patan has been wronged by BJP for the paste several years. He said BJP has not bothered to sign any MoU related to developments in the region. He highlighted that the Kendriya Vidyalaya, which was built at the crores of rupees is abandoned due to the lack of strong leadership. Chandanji said, his effort will be to bring out the voices of Patan to the Parliament.

The battle for Patan Lok Sabha is intense. During the seven phased Lok Sabha election of 2024, Gujarat will go to polls on May 7th.
