Two paramilitary personnel killed and tow others were injured during a suspected insurgent attack in Manipur. The incident happened in the state’s Bishnupur district. Allegedly, a group of Kuki insurgents opened gunfire from a Naranseina village towards the security force post in the valley region.

The killed personnel belonged to Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) 128 Battalion. They were identified as CRPF sub-inspector N Sarkar and head constable Arup Saini. The injured personnel were identified as inspector Jadav Das and constable Aftab Das.

According to NDTV, the firing escalated when a bomb detonated within the outpost, which caused severe injuries to four military personnel. Despite of the swift medical attention, two of the personnel died while two are undergoing treatment. Reportedly, the attackers launched attack starting from midnight until 2:15 am approximately.

As per Manipur police, the attack happened six days before the first anniversary of the beginning of Manipur ethnic violence and added that the militants hiding in the hills are likely to bolster the attack in the coming days.

The attack happened at a camp of Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) camp where the CRPF personnel were stationed after the poll duty in the state. The camp is situated 2 km away from the hills. Over a kilometre away from the camp lies an area known as the Upper Canal. The security forces used to be posted there since it is considered a sensitive area after violence broke out in May last year.

As per NDTV sources, the attackers used crude artillery weapons called “pumpi gun” to attack the gun. A senior police officer said, “the militants fired indiscriminately from hilltops, targeting the camp. It started around 12.30 am and continued till about 2.15 am. The militants also hurled bombs, one of which exploded in the outpost of CRPF’s 128 battalion”, as quoted by PTI. As per media report, the police said that a massive combing operation is underway in the region to track down the attackers.
