Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

Shreyas Patel, a youth leader of the Congress party from Hassan district has been given a ticket by the party after losing his debut in the assembly elections in 2023. He has been nominated from Karnataka’s Hassan Lok Sabha constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The BJP will not be contesting from the constituency as it will be left to the saffron party’s ally JD(S). Shreyas Patel graduated in Management from Mahajana First Grade College, Mysore. An entrepreneur, The 32-year-old Patel has a declared asset of more than 37 crore as per his affidavit.

During his electoral debut in the 2023 Karnataka assembly elections from Holenarseepur constituency, a segment of Hassan Lok Sabha seat, Mr Patel gave a tough competition to the JD(S)’s H. D. Revanna. Compared to the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress could raise its vote share significantly, making the re-election of the JD(S) candidate in a narrow majority. Mr Ravenna is the grandson of the former Prime Minister Devegowda. The margin of the JDU candidate’s victory had been termed as a partial defeat by analysts in the political circle.

JD(S) has been representing the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency since 2004 and the constituency also marks the former prime minister and JDS leader HD Devegowda’s five-term representation. The Congress has exhibited its confidence in Shreyas Patel to confront the sitting JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna considering his assembly elections performance.

Notably, Mr Patel is the grandson of G. Puttaswamy who defeated the JD(S) stalwart HD Devegowda in the 13th Lok Sabha elections on the ticket given by the Congress party. The constituency will however witness the electoral battle of two grandsons of Karnataka political stalwarts.

Shreyas Patel is also the relative of the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Sivakumar. He could consolidate the youth vote during the assembly elections with his oratory skills.
