New Delhi: The Congress party today announced to launch a nationwide crowd funding campaign, ‘Donate for Desh’ for generating resources for the party. The largest crowdfunding campaign in the country, by any political party, will be launched by the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on December 18 in New Delhi, a statement from the party said.
Announcing this here today, Congress general secretary organization KC Venugopal and Treasurer Ajay Maken said, any Indian citizen above the age of 18 can donate to the party a minimum of Rs 138 or in its multiples like 1,380 or 13,800 and so on.
Mr Venugopal said the initiative was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi”s historic “Tilak Swaraj Fund”, which was launched over a hundred years ago in 1920-21. He said, the initiative aims to empower the party in creating an India rich in equal resource distribution and opportunities.
“Our inaugural campaign, “Donate for Behtar Bharat”, commemorates the 138-year journey of the Indian National Congress. Embracing our history, we invite supporters to donate multiples of Rs 138 (e.g., Rs 138, Rs 1380, Rs 13,800, or more), symbolising the party”s enduring commitment to a better India”, he added.
The party has created two channels for this online crowdfunding. These include a dedicated online portal donateinc.in and the official Indian National Congress website, www.inc.in.
The Congress general secretary said the campaign will be officially launched by the Congress President, Mr Kharge on December 18 in New Delhi, with the donation link going live simultaneously.
All Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents will raise awareness through press conferences and social media, he said, adding, the campaign will primarily be online until December 28, the foundation day, after which ground campaigns will be launched, including door-to-door visits by volunteers, targeting at least ten houses in every booth for contributions of at least Rs 138 from each house.
He said, state-level office bearers, elected representatives, DCC Presidents, PCC Presidents and AICC office bearers will be encouraged to contribute at least Rs 1,380 each.
Mr Venugopal also announced that to mark the 138th Foundation Day of the party, a mammoth rally will be organized in Nagpur on December 28. He said, at least ten lakh people will attend the historic rally.
Replying to a question on the issue of security breach in the parliament, the Congress general secretary refuted that his party was politicizing the incident. He pointed out, the Delhi Police, which comes under the union Home Ministry had described it as a “terror attack” in the court.
He pointed out that the opposition was only seeking discussion. He said, while the MP who facilitated the entry of the accused in the parliament was not even questioned, those seeking answers from the government had been suspended.
