With counting beginning at 8 am with postal ballots followed by electronic voting machines (EVMs) and matching VVPAT slips, the results for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 are set to be declared today across 542 parliamentary constituencies.
The Surat seat in Gujarat had the BJP’s Mukesh Dalal as the uncontested winner after all eight candidates withdrew after Congress candidate Nilesh Kumbhani’s candidature was rejected on April 22, a day before the elections.
According to reports, the BJP is leading in Madhya Pradesh with 29 seats while Congress’ lone hopes of winning Chhindwara are in danger as Nakul Nath trails behind. In Bihar, the JD(U) leads in 15 seats, closely followed by BJP in 13 seats. The LJPRV has lead in 5 seats while the RJD has 3 seats so far, according to data released by the EC.
Out of the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar, the key seats to look out for are Patna Sahib, Patliputra, Karakat, Jahanabad, Nalanda, and Arrah. With candidates such as RJD leaders Misa Bharti, Rohini Acharya, LJP president Chirag Paswan, and more in the fray, the election results will determine how many seats the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secures and whether the INDIA alliance and RJD youth leader Tejashwi Yadav are able to make a significant impact in the state. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 17 seats, the JD(U) won 16, and Congress secured one seat.
With 29 Lok Sabha seats, Madhya Pradesh witnessed the BJP’s landslide victory in 2014, bagging 27 seats but losing Chhindwara and Guna to the opposing Congress. In 2019, however, it regained Guna and secured victory over 28 seats. The major seat includes Chhindwara, the elusive seat that the BJP has been unable to ascertain victory over. Congress candidate and son of former state chief minister Kamal Nath, Nakul Nath is in the fray to maintain the family seat this elections.
