Dilip Saika, a candidate of the BJP party, contesting in the Darrang Udalguri (previously known as Mangaldoi) constituency of the Assam Lok Sabha election 2024. He was elected as the MP of the Mongoldoi in the 2019 Lok Sabha election and marked his win by securing 40%, which was a total of 735469 votes defeating Bhubaneswar Kalita of Congress.
Dilip Saika showcased his political interest since his student days, as he was involved in student politics and held leadership roles in the student branch of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Before joining the BJP in 2015, he was the state secretary and state organizing secretary of the ABVP in Assam.
He entered the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Mangaldoi, Assam, demonstrating his elevated political aspirations. After coming out on top against a strong opponent, he won the state’s key seat for the BJP. He won the Mangaldoi constituency Lok Sabha election 2019 as he secured 735469 votes, thus declaring the victory against Bhubaneswar Kalita of Congress, who secured 596924 votes. Saikia’s career and the BJP’s rising influence in Assam witnessed tremendous change with this victory.
His political career has not been without controversy. Some segments of Assamese society have taken issue with his affiliation with the BJP, especially about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Some people believe that his position on these matters is counterproductive to the interests of the Assamese people.
This new Darrang Udalguri constituency of Assam witnessed the electoral battle between Dilip Saika of the BJP and Madhab Raibanshi of the Congress.
