Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Impeachment Process; Avoids Citing Reason
Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned as a judge at the Allahabad High Court amid the impeachment process to remove him over alleged corruption. Verma came under fire after a huge amount of cash was recovered from his home in Delhi last year. However, Justice Varma has denied any association with the stashed cash.
In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Justice Varma did not mention any reason for the decision.
In a letter dated April 9, Justice Varma wrote, “While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of Hon’ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect”.
With his resignation, the impeachment process to remove him from the high court will come to an end.
Justice Varma will be entitled to pension and other benefits of being a retired high court judge. He would have been deprived of the benefits if he had been removed through the impeachment process.
The impeachment process is related to the recovery of a large amount of cash recovered from Justice Varma’s official residence in Lutyens Delhi on March 14, 2025. At that time, he was serving as a judge at the Delhi High Court. The burnt case was allegedly found in the storeroom near the servants’ quarters. Justice Varma and his wife were in Bhopal at that time.
