South Asian University Attempted Gang-Rape Case; Administration Suppression

A first-year B.Tech female student of South Asian University (SAU) in South Delhi has alleged an attempted gang rape on campus, as per the police report. Later, someone known to the victim made the call about the alleged incident. Since the incident occurred, SAU students have been demanding accountability and the arrest of the accused; however, no progress has been made in the matter so far.

An FIR has been filed in the matter; however, authorities have confirmed that the victim’s statement has not been recorded yet.

Reportedly, on October 12, the female student was threatened with the circulation of her morphed photographs and received messages via social media, and was asked to reach the university gate within an hour. She took a back route from the hostel and went via a construction site on the campus where the incident happened.

A guard, a middle-aged man, and two others surrounded her and sexually assaulted her. The accused ran away after hearing the sound of a food cart from the rear side of the mess.

Students are alleging that the administration is attempting to hide evidence and failed to support the victim.

As per the TOI report, the email sent by the warden Rinkoo D. Gupta to the registrar mentioned the alleged sexual attack as a panic attack. The mail read, “This is to inform you that a girl… is having panic attacks and trying to hurt herself. Her T-shirt is also torn. Dr. Priyadarshini (of the university’s medical centre) has examined her and observed that her vitals are normal. However, she has recommended filing an FIR and is taking her to Safdarjung Hospital for a complete check-up and treatment”.

Apart from the denial of sexual assault in the written email, the administration is rejecting the gang rape attempt and threatening students, as seen in the viral video, while students confronted the administration.

The Union ministry of external affairs has sought report from SAU regarding the alleged sexual assault on the female student. Notably, SAU is an international university funded by the Saarc nations, function under the ministry.
