Robber Returns Valuables After Realising House Belonged To Famous Marathi Writer (image:/x.com/dayakamPR)

A robber who filled with regret, after realising that the house he stole valuables from belonged to renowned Marathi writer Narayan Surve, he returned the valuables, police said on Tuesday.

Narayan Surve’s residence was located in Neral, Raigad district. Surve died on August 16, 2010 at the age of 84. Currently, Surve’s daughter Sujata and her husband Ganesh Ghare now live at that house. They had gone to Virar to be with their son, and their house had been shut for ten days.

It was during this time, the robber entered the house and stole several items, including the LED TV set. When he returned next day to pick some more items, thief came across writer’s phot and memorabilia. It suddenly posed change of heart in the robber, expressing remorse, he returned all items he had taken.

He also sought apology by leaving a short message on wall. Sujata and her husband found the note after they returned from Virar on Sunday, Nerali police inspector Shivaji Dhavle said.

Police are conducting investigation based on the fingerprints found on the Television and other articles.

Before Surve became a famous Marathi poet, he had grown up as an orphan on the streets of Mumbai. He survived by working as a domestic help, a dishwasher in a hotel, a babysitter, a pet-dog caretaker, a milk delivery boy, a porter and a mill hand. His poetry handled themes on labour and challenged the established literary norms in Marathi literature.
