Adam Britton, a 53-year-old zoologist and a crocodile expert from the UK has been sentenced to ten years and five months in prison in Australia for sexually abusing several dogs. The British zoologist, also a PhD holder, confessed to the crime, pleading guilty to 56 charges of bestiality, the crime of engaging in sexual relations with an animal and animal cruelty. He is reported to have raped over 40 dogs.
According to a report by the BBC, Britton admitted to four counts of accessing child abuse material. He had previously worked on BBC and National Geographic productions. It is reported that since at least 2014, the Zoologist had nurtured a ‘sadistic sexual interest’ in animals, especially towards dogs. According to the prosecutors, Britton used to torture animals in his torture room until their last breath. The 53-year-old also recorded his sexual exploitation of animals and posted them online, the report said citing the prosecutors.

While hearing the case, Northern Territory (NT) Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Grant appealed to the public and security staff to leave the courtroom before the prosecutors presented the horrific stories in the case, due to the horrific and ‘grotesque’ nature of the crime. Many already rushed outside while they paid heed to the alarming stories. The judge called the crime “devious” and said Britton took “unalloyed pleasure” in torturing the animals. “[Your] depravity falls entirely outside any ordinary human conception,” Grant added.
To commit the crime, Britton used online platforms and marketplaces and bought dogs from owners, and he specifically targeted pet owners in the Darwin region. The zoologist’s animal harassment went unnoticed for years, before he was finally nabbed in April 2022 in a search operation that recovered some abuse material from his laptop.

While carrying out the crime, Britton had also maintained a Telegram account to connect and communicate with like-minded people. He has been abusing animals for at least a decade, and he has abused his own pets in addition to tricking other dog owners into giving him their pets.
Those who are familiar with Britton say he appeared a quiet and passionate defender of animals but was harbouring a sadistic sexual interest in them. However, his lawyer argued that the crime was driven by a rare disorder causing intense, atypical sexual interests.
