On Thursday, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi took the oath as Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan in the presence of Leader of the House Piyush Goyal, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, secretary general PC Mody, and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.

Filling the seat left vacant after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh completed his tenure on April 3, Sonia Gandhi was sworn in as the Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan. Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar administered the oath in the Parliament House building.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to wish the newly appointed RS member on her journey. He wrote, “My best wishes to the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, as she begins her new innings, by taking oath in the Rajya Sabha, today. Her courageous resilience and dignified grace, in the wake of adversity and upheaval, shall continue to guide our parliamentary strategy. She has completed 25 years serving the Lok Sabha, and now my fellow members and I await her presence in the Upper House. I wish her a fruitful tenure ahead.”

Apart from the former Congress President, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav was sworn in as an MP from the state of Odisha.

Among the 14 other political leaders, Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Syed Naseer Hussain from Karnataka, BJP member Samik Bhattacharya from West Bengal, and the BJP”s RPN Singh from Uttar Pradesh also took oaths as members of the upper house.

YSRCP leaders Yerram Venkata Subba Reddy, Meda Raghunadha Reddy, and Golla Baburao, and BRS leader Ravi Chandra Vaddiraju, also took oaths as members representing Andhra Pradesh.

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders Subhashish Khuntia and Debashish Samantaray representing Odisha, Sanjay Kumar Jha of Janata Dal (United) from Bihar, and BJP’s Madan Rathore took oath as Rajya Sabha members from Rajasthan.
