“Finding It Perplexing”: Irfan Pathan Questions Ishan Kishan’s Absence from Domestic Cricket

Edited by Shibu NK

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed bewilderment over the continued absence of young wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan from domestic cricket despite his active participation in training sessions. Kishan, who has been away from international cricket since the South Africa tour in December due to personal reasons, has yet to make himself available for selection in domestic matches.

Pathan’s remarks come in the wake of Kishan’s decision to take a break from cricket action, reportedly citing mental fatigue. Despite being fit to practice, Kishan has not featured in any domestic fixtures, raising questions about the rationale behind his absence.

The left-handed batsman, known for his explosive batting style, has been training alongside players like Hardik and Krunal Pandya, indicating his physical readiness for competitive cricket. However, Kishan’s continued exclusion from domestic tournaments, including the ongoing Ranji Trophy where he is not part of the Jharkhand team, has left observers puzzled.

Indian team’s head coach Rahul Dravid had earlier suggested that Kishan could make a comeback into the national side after participating in domestic cricket. However, Dravid later clarified that the decision ultimately rests with Kishan himself, stating, “Whenever he is ready… he needs to play some cricket and come back. The choice is his.”

Yesterday, former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra has also emphasized the importance of left-handed batter Ishan Kishan actively participating in cricket to enhance his chances of selection for the national team.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra echoed India head coach Rahul Dravid’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for Kishan to make himself available for selection. He stressed the significance of consistent cricketing activity for a player’s growth and development, suggesting that Kishan’s prolonged break from domestic cricket could hinder his progress.
