The Indian team’s trouble doubles ahead of its opening match against Australia which is scheduled to be held on October 8, Sunday at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Indian’s most prolific batsman Shubman Gill tests positive for Dengue and his participation in the coming match remains uncertain.

A source from BCCI has confirmed to news agency ANI that Shubman’s health condition worsened after they arrived in Chennai. “His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday and a call will be taken on his participation in opening game,” a source stated on the state of anonymity to ANI.

Gill is now tested positive for dengue, a potentially serious mosquito-borne illness. And there is a high possibility for him to be sidelined for a couple of matches in the tournament. The Indian team management will monitor Gill’s progress. Physical recovery from dengue usually takes around 7-10 days.

“Let’s not jump the gun. If it’s normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics but it’s completely the medical team’s call,” the source said.

Bill’s absence will be a gut punch for India who looks forward to have a perfect start especially after their stunning 2-1 win against Aussies in the ODI series last week. The team will have to find a replacement to cover Gill’s absence. The power batter has been India’s most reliable scorer this year and have proved to be a one of the best openers in the world cricket with an average of over 70 runs in ODI’s this year. He has made 20 appearances for India, scoring 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and scored five centuries and five fifties. It is expected him to return in complete fitness before the all-important match against Pakistan at Ahmedabad.

It is more likely that Ishan Kishan might take up Gill’s role in the coming match alongside the captain, Rohit Sharma. Ishan has been in an impressive form this year. He has scored 409 runs in 13 innings with four fifties. He had shown his ability to bat at any positions in the line-up.
