Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of cementing his place as Team India opener in the longest format. But Test great Brian Lara has earmarked him for mental adjustments during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to succeed in all conditions.
“Obviously, the pitches in Australia are slightly different. But if you take your mentality, and if you take that sort of strength that you have, you’re going to play good cricket in any conditions,” Lara said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Tuesday. “I expect to see him do well.”
The young southpaw has asserted himself into the scene at home conditions, scoring 901 runs in seven matches at a scintillating average of 75.08 with a double century and two centuries already to his name.
However, the conditions Down Under will be different, with the Kookaburra ball and pitch likely to wreak havoc at the young gun.
“I think the adjustment is upstairs,” Lara said, pointing towards his head, continuing, “The adjustment is the ability to back your talent in whatever conditions. I say this with a pinch of salt, because conditions in India have changed.
“With the IPL, you’ve got international players coming – and you’re feeding your players a different level of competition, which is great. So I don’t think there’s much that he (Jaiswal) has to do technically. I just think mentally (he has to adjust): traveling away from home, (and) playing against Australia; Australia, on their shores, are a different beast.”
Before the much-anticipated Australia tour, Jaiswal will be expected to rake up vital runs against New Zealand in the three-Test series at home, starting October 16.
