Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, renowned for his flamboyant batting in the 1990s, has been hospitalised after his condition deteriorated on Saturday night. The 52-year-old was admitted to Akriti Hospital in Thane, where his condition is currently reported as stable but critical, reports said.
Kambli has faced numerous health challenges in recent years, including a cardiac arrest in 2013 and angioplasty in 2012, which have drawn public attention and concern. His health struggles resurfaced during his recent appearance at the unveiling of coach Ramakant Achrekar’s statue at Shivaji Park, where his frail condition alarmed fans and fellow cricketers.

In response to his declining health, members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, including Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, have offered their assistance. However, both emphasised the need for Kambli to undergo rehabilitation to ensure meaningful recovery.
Kambli’s relationship with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been a central theme of his life. The duo, who formed a record-breaking 664-run partnership during their school days, have shared a bond that transcends the cricket field. Tendulkar’s reunion with Kambli at the recent event sparked both nostalgia and concern, with a viral video showing Kambli holding on to Tendulkar’s hand in a poignant moment.

Kambli’s health issues have been compounded by financial struggles. Despite receiving a pension from the BCCI, he has expressed difficulty in maintaining stability post-retirement. Unlike Tendulkar, who built a strong brand off the field, Kambli’s ventures into coaching and commentary have been sporadic.
