A recent video of cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli’s reunion at Shivaji Park for the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to their childhood coach, Ramakant Achrekar has gone viral on social media. The event which was held in the iconic ground where their future was shaped, evoked memories of the duo’s historic 664-run partnership in a Harris Shield match for Shardashram Vidyamandir against St. Xavier’s.
However, what shocked the fans was the uncanny moment the two players shared on the stage during their interaction. Tendulkar walked over to greet Kambli, who appeared unwilling to let go of his childhood friend’s hand as Kambli seemed reluctant to release his grip. It was only after the host called out to Tendulkar several times that he was forced to let go. The video was shared on X by a user with the caption, “Vinod Kambli is just 52, but he has aged beyond his years. It’s sad to see his situation and the self-damage he inflicted. A warning for current and upcoming cricketers.”

So what has happened to Vinod Kambli?
Before heading to what had happened, it’s important to know who is this legendary cricketer Vinod Kambli. Vinod Kambli had played in total 17 Tests and 104 ODIs. Known for his flamboyant battling style and a knack for scoring runs, Kambli had an unforgettable start to his Test career. Though Sachin and Kambli made their debut at a young age, they both had a very contrasting career. When Sachin represented India for 24 years, Kambli couldn’t play much long.
However, the friendship between Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar is a tale of the ages. Right from their school days under coach Ramakant Achrekar to their historic partnership in the Harris Sheild Trophy. Their bond, forged through years of shared victories and challenges, remains one of cricket’s most celebrated friendships.
However, apart from his stupendous performance, Kambli’s health issue has garnered attention. His financial troubles have also been a recurring theme. When many of his contemporaries later went for commentary, coaching, or administrative roles, Kambli faced significant hardships. He himself had once opened up that he relies on the pension provided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to make ends meet.

Unlike Sachin who had gone on to build his brand, Kambli largely stayed away from public life but has occasionally sought roles in cricketing academics and commentary. However, Kambli’s brief brilliance and flamboyant style continue to inspire.
