Will Carlo Ancelotti Coach the Brazil National Team?

All eyes are once again on Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti following Brazil’s devastating 1-4 defeat to arch-rivals Argentina last night. The heavy loss has intensified the pressure on Brazil’s national team coach, Dorival Júnior, reigniting discussions about a potential leadership change.

Long before the latest setback, the President of the CBF had considered Carlo Ancelotti as the ideal candidate to take charge of the national team, and with concerns mounting, the Italian’s name has resurfaced as the prime choice. Unlike earlier, Brazil’s hope of bringing in the Italian coach is possible as Ancelotti’s tenure at Real Madrid is uncertain beyond the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, while the Italian manager remains under contract with Madrid until mid-2026, many believe he is unlikely to continue beyond the June-July tournament in the United States. Moreover, ever since the suggestion was tabled, he has remained open to the prospect of managing the Brazilian national team.

Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário previously revealed the real reason why negotiations between the CBF and Ancelotti failed, despite the coach being close to taking over the national team for the 2023/24 season. Ronaldo stated, “If Ancelotti had not won any titles, Real Madrid would have sacked him, and then he would have come to Brazil. But he won the Champions League, which guaranteed him an additional season.”

Despite the pressure, an immediate decision will not be taken soon due to the Club World Cup commitments. Moreover, apart from Ancelotti, CBF too had considered other candidates. These include Jorge Jesus, currently managing Al-Hilal, and Abel Ferreira, the head coach of Palmeiras.

However, they have not received the same internal support within the CBF. Given the situation, it is expected that the final decision regarding the managerial position will be taken after the FIFA Club World Cup in June.
