Meta Reports 5.3 Million Pieces Of Child Sexual Exploitation Content In India In Six Months

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has said it is using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and other forms of child sexual exploitation content on its platforms.

The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny from the Indian government over the presence of such content on social media platforms.

According to Meta, it actioned 5.3 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content on Facebook and Instagram in India between January and June 2026.

The company said more than 98% of the content was detected and addressed proactively, before anyone reported it.

Meta said its measures include using large language models (LLMs) to identify child sexual abuse material, conducting AI-based checks of advertisements and improving transparency around ads.

The company is also using AI tools to identify potential security weaknesses in its systems and detect users who create new accounts after their previous accounts have been removed.

The issue came under the spotlight after media reports highlighted the presence of child sexual abuse material in advertisements on Instagram and Facebook.

The Union government and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) have also held discussions with Meta over the issue.

A few weeks ago, Meta said it would share reports of child sexual abuse material directly with Indian law enforcement authorities.

The company also reports such cases to the US-based National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).
