Meta has officially launched Edits, a brand-new, free video-editing app on Tuesday, designed specifically to help creators craft stunning Instagram Reels.
Available now for both Android and iOS, Edits aims to simplify the video creation process while packing a powerful punch of AI-driven tools and advanced features without watermarks.
The release of Edits comes at a time of shifting dynamics in the short-form video space. Following the United States’ announcement of a ban on TikTok and CapCut in early 2024, Meta appears to be positioning Edits as a strategic alternative to fill the potential void left by these platforms.
While CapCut was never available in India, it gained significant popularity among creators in the United States, and its absence has created an opportunity for Meta to expand its creator ecosystem.
Edits distinguishes itself with an array of advanced editing tools and seamless integration with Instagram. Key features include:
-
Clip-level precision editing, allowing for frame-specific adjustments
-
Auto-enhance tools to optimise video quality automatically
-
AI-powered image animation to bring static visuals to life
-
No watermark on exported content
-
Native camera integration, enabling direct capture and editing within the app
-
Access to Meta’s extensive licensed music library for legal and diverse soundtrack options
In addition, the app offers trend-based insights and inspiration to help users create relevant and engaging content.
Unlike third-party editing applications, Edits requires an Instagram account for access. This integration not only simplifies the publishing process but also allows creators to track video performance and engage with their audiences directly through the platform.

Meta has announced that Edits will continue to evolve with the addition of advanced editing features, including keyframe animation, enhanced modification tools and collaboration functionality for multi-user projects.
According to a report by tech insider Alessandro Paluzzi, Meta is developing a subscription-based model named Asteria. This premium tier is expected to unlock more advanced generative AI features and exclusive tools for professional users.
