California, US: OpenAI made a major upgrade to its popular ChatGPT chatbot on Thursday by adding search engine capabilities.

Previously, ChatGPT had limitations due to time cutoffs which made it difficult to provide up-to-date information. However, with the new search feature, users can access real-time information from across the web.
The chatbot’s homepage now offers direct tabs to sourced material on various topics including weather forecasts, stock prices, sports scores and breaking news.

OpenAI has recently partnered with several prominent news organisations, such as Le Monde, Axel Springer and the Financial Times to provide accurate and reliable information that these partnerships allow ChatGPT to link to news and data from trusted sources.
The search feature is currently available to paying subscribers but will soon be reportedly expanded to free users.
Hey, I’m sorry to keep hyping our product but you really should get ChatGPT Plus and install the Chrome extension for search.
I am cheerfully the first to admit when we ship something that isn’t very good, but this time it’s…really good.

Users can enable the search feature by default or activate it manually via a web search icon and also OpenAI invites website owners and publishers to opt-in to appear in ChatGPT’s search results.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his excitement about the new feature, calling it his “favourite” since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022.
Search is my favourite feature we have launched in ChatGPT since the original launch!
It has probably doubled my usage over the past few weeks. https://t.co/alD11AwUUb

The launch has also sparked interest in OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft which is a major investor company. Microsoft is also reportedly trying to expand its Bing search engine’s reach. OpenAI’s valuation recently reached $157 billion on account of this investment from Microsoft, SoftBank, and chip giant Nvidia.
It was said that the upgrade would increase OpenAI’s computing needs and costs. However, the company is expecting that its search engine capabilities will attract new users and establish ChatGPT as a leading internet powerhouse which will further take on Google.
