Alphabet-owned YouTube platform unveiled a new feature ‘Family Center‘ that will allow parents to monitor their children through shared notifications and insights about the videos they scroll. This feature will be rolled out to all countries this week, according to a blog posted on Wednesday.

YouTube stated that the new feature aims to keep parents informed about their kids’  activities on YouTube. This will also help parents suggest that their teens choose responsible and quality content on the platform. To enable this option, parents and children have to link their YouTube accounts together and will get access to monitor the information while giving further information including subscriptions, comments and the number of uploads.

Here is the step-by-step guide to do it:

  • Head to the Family Center on the YouTube settings
  • Click on the ‘invite a teen’ option and undergo the QR code process
  • The account will be linked further
  • The parents will be able to access all details
  • This supervision feature can also be turned off by the parents or children at any point in time.

This new feature will also allow parents to get notified with an email about the activities their children do, such as live streaming and video uploading. YouTube took advice from renowned child development specialists, digital learning experts, and children’s media professionals from esteemed academic, nonprofit, and clinical institutions to inform the creation of its innovative feature and how it works for teens, as stated in the blog post.

YouTube has already rolled out a unique platform exclusively for kids and has 100 million users as active logged-in accounts. Last year in November the platform unwrapped a safeguard feature for its users limiting repeated recommendations that display tussle, unhealthy conversations and intimidation. Earlier it was monitored by creating a supervised Google Account for YouTube that allows parents to manage their child’s experience on the app, website, Smart TVs and gaming consoles. This can be also done through Google’s Family Link app that will give access to parents to block channels, adjust time limits and more.
