Legendary Mountaineer Nirmal 'Nimsdai' Purja Dies In Broad Peak Avalanche
Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja has died after an avalanche struck his expedition on Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains, during a climbing mission in the Karakoram range. He was 42.
Purja had been reported missing after the avalanche hit the mountain on Friday.
On Saturday, his expedition company confirmed that he had died in the incident. The company also said that other members of the expedition, including experienced climbers and guides, lost their lives.
Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain at 8,051 metres, is located in the Karakoram range near K2 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Rescue efforts were launched after the avalanche, but the team could not be saved.
Known globally as “Nimsdai,” Purja was regarded as one of the greatest high-altitude climbers of his generation.
A former Gurkha and member of the UK’s elite Special Boat Service (SBS), he left the military to pursue mountaineering and went on to achieve several historic milestones.

In 2019, he stunned the climbing world by scaling all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just six months and six days, breaking the previous record by a huge margin.
He also played a key role in the first successful winter ascent of K2 in 2021, a feat long considered one of mountaineering’s toughest challenges.
Purja inspired millions through his achievements, motivational work and his belief that human limits could always be pushed further.
