If sandy shores, exciting wildlife amid golden dunes, then Saudi Arabia has a place for you in store. Known to be home to the largest sand desert on the planet, one of the epic sands in the Kingdom is the UNESCO-listed Al Asfar Lake, also known as Yellow Lake.
Located in the Eastern Province, the dunes provide an ideal seat for birdwatching. The gorgeous shallow wetland is in the middle of the desert and is home to a variety of migrating birds and indigenous plant species.

The lake has a rich history. Being one of the 12 UNESCO sites in Al Ahsa, a World Heritage Site, the stunning lake is surrounded by wetlands, dunes, and vast stretches of open water. Back in 1971, an irrigation system was installed, delivering over 328,000,000 cubic meters of spring water to around 22,000 farms. The excess water is collected by the drainage system and discharged into two evaporation lakes known as Al-Asfar and Al-Uyoun.
The lake is also known for its fascinating ability to change hues from dark in the summer to bright in the winter.
