Timeline journalist and Kerala-based influencer Wafa Hussain is being trolled and abused heavily on social media following a recent video where she responded to a viral comment from the controversial India’s Got Latent episode.

She has been subjected to racial and Islamophobic abuses in the video’s comment section as well as in her DMs.

In the controversial India’s Got Latent episode where Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks have become a national headline, comedian Jaspreet Singh, one of the judges at the show, made a joke about Kerala’s literacy with the phrase, “Kerala, saar… 100% literacy saar,” in an exaggerated Malayali accent.

His remark came after a contestant from Kerala stated she had no political leanings and did not vote.

In response to this, Malayalis condemned the remark as an outdated stereotype.

Along the same lines, Wafa made a rebuttal video defending Kerala’s progressive values and called out the misrepresentation of the state’s identity.

Her remarks, however, were met with a surge of online attacks, with many misinterpreting her statements. The abuse has ranged from personal insults to religious hate speech, with some users targeting her direct messages with threats, and some even called her a terrorist.

Wafa told Timeline that she will be filing legal complaints against those responsible for the harassment.
