Makkah, Saudi Arabia: One of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world, the Hajj pilgrimage began on Monday, May 25. More than 1.5 million pilgrims have flocked to Saudi Arabia for the religious ritual, considered as one of the five key pillars of Islam.

This year’s Hajj occurs at the time of a tenuous ceasefire in the Iran war amid regional tensions. Notably, the pilgrims’ influx continues unabated despite the regional tension and fragile ceasefire due to the war in Iran and the attacks across the region.
