India on Thursday reiterated the nation”s support to establish Palestine as a sovereign state that could exist side-by-side with rival Israel. The comment came amidst of the ongoing deadly conflict between Israel and Palestine resistance movements, which was triggered after a ‘surprise’ attack from the Islamist militant group Hamas to the Jewish country on Saturday morning.

India’s official spokesperson to the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi, during the weekly media briefing condemned the war and termed the assault mounted on Israel by Hamas as a “terrorist attack”. But he explained that India has always backed direct negotiations for the inception of a sovereign state of Palestine.

To a question by the media person, Mr Bagchi explained that the country’s position to Palestine is long-standing and consistent, and it has backed direct negotiations for a “sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine” with secure and recognized borders, existing close together to Israel in peace.

Mr Bagchi also conveyed the nation’s determination to observe and practice international humanitarian law encompassed of a global responsibility. To fight against terrorism and all its forms and manifestations is a primary concern for the state.

Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had denounced the “terrorist attack’’ and told his Israeli counterpart that India stands in solidarity with Israel. India launched Operation Ajay in background of rising tension and brought back the first team of 212 Indian nationals from Israel by Friday morning. The External Affairs Ministry is in close touch with Tel Aviv, coordinating the mission.

The Congress Working Committee also reiterated their long-standing support to the Palestine, as the people of the region has all the rights to live in a peaceful land under a local self-government with dignity and respect.
