Saudi Arabia And China Sign Approved Destination Status Agreement

Saudi Arabia has agreed to increase access to Chinese tourists under the Approved Destination Status (ADS), starting from July 1, 2024. The ADS aims to make China the 3rd largest source market for tourists to Saudi Arabia by 2030  and aligns with the Riyad’s goal to attract 5 million Chinese tourists by 2030. After signing the agreement the Chinese tourist groups will easily visit Saudi Arabia.

The move highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with China, boosting the tourism sector, and promoting mutual understanding, cooperation, and economic growth. The Saudi’s Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb said that the agreement shows the Kingdom’s readiness for Chinese visitors.

China’s ADS policy is a bilateral agreement between countries that allows its citizens to travel in organized groups for tourism purposes to specific overseas. The policy was introduced in the early 1990s to facilitate international travel for Chinese citizens and increase disposable income.

As per the officials, the ADS agreement will benefit both nations opening up doors for economic development and strengthening bilateral ties with China. The Saudi Tourism Authority has reportedly played a crucial role in visa facilitation, reduced visa fees, improved air connectivity, and Mandarin language facilitation for tour and hotel services.

In February, top officials from both countries met at a high-level meeting in Beijing, focusing on investment opportunities, technology transfer, and boosting economic cooperation. During the meeting, the Kingdom’s representatives emphasized the significant investments in the tourism sector and expressed Saudi Arabia’s openness to further cooperation.
