Far-right populist Greet Wilders could be Netherland’s next prime minister as his party won majority seats in the recently held Dutch elections. The populist party has secured 37 seats of the total 150 in the Dutch parliament.
Wilder’s victory will trigger many consequences in the Netherlands and Europe. The anti-EU politician has vowed to halt all immigration, Dutch payments to the union and block the entrance of any new members, including Ukraine, reports the wire.
Wilders will now have to persuade other parties to join him to form a coalition government. His target is 76 seats in the parliament.
Wilder’s is known for his anti-Islam views, as he had linked Muslim immigration with terrorism and also called for a ban on mosques and the Quran. He was also convicted for inciting discrimination, although was later acquitted and was refused entry to the UK back in 2009. He has faced several death threats due to his anti-Islam view and thus was provided with police protection since 2004, reports BBC.
But Wilder softened his view on Islam during this election campaign than in the past.
However, it is uncertain that whether he will be able to garner the necessary support to form the government. Before the vote, the other top party leaders have confirmed that they will not serve in a PVV-led coalition.
The Dutch leader started his career as a member of former Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s liberal group but broke away to serve as an independent lawmaker. He later then set up an anti-migrant freedom party, known as the PVV in Dutch.
The Dutch leader also backed the BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s comment on Prophet Muhammed.
“Nupur Sharma is a hero who spoke nothing but the truth. The whole world should be proud of her. She deserves the Nobel Prize. And India is a Hindu nation, the Indian government is obliged to strongly defend Hindus against Islamic hate and violence,” he tweeted supporting the leader.
