Knockout Kicks Off With Two Major Upsets: Germany, Netherlands Sent Home

Two of the major teams, Germany and the Netherlands were kicked out of the FIFA world cup 2016 during the knockout round on Tuesday morning. Both were eliminated after intense fight on the field, followed by a dramatic penalty shootouts. After a 1-1 draw,  Germany, the four-time World Cup champions, fell 4-3 to Paraguay while Netherlands lost to Morocco, also after a 1-1 tie.

Both were considered two of the powerful European giants. The elimination of these giants has caused major upset among fans, who had pinned high hopes on the teams.

Paraguay took the lead just before half-time when Julio Enciso headed in Matías Galarza’s cross in the 42nd minute.  The four-time World Cup champion Germany hit back after the break when Florian Wirtz set up Kai Havertz, who headed in the equaliser in the 54th minute.

Extra time saw tense fight with few real chances, eventually leading to the penalty shootout. In the end, Paraguay shocked Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Germany, a four-time World Cup champion, missed three penalties.

The Netherlands, another formidable European team, lost to Morocco in a 2-3 on penalties. Netherland fans, having lost in three final matches, had high hope during this season.
