Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries strongly condemned and denounced an extremist group in the Hague for tearing up copies of the Quran in front of several embassies.
The statement released by GCC countries stressed that such actions would inflame the feelings of Muslims around the world.
GCC Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi reiterates the call once again to the international community to take urgent and effective international steps to confront these aggressive and provocative actions, as these practices have unfortunately been repeated recently under the pretext of freedom of expression, without any clear reaction to them,” said the statement posted on the GCC website.
He also stressed the need for countries where these practices occur to intervene urgently and assume their legal and moral responsibilities to stop such internationally unacceptable actions.
Saudi Arabia also came forward expressing their condemnation in the incident. In the statement released by Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Foreign Ministry reiterated the Kingdom’s complete rejection of such repeated and hateful acts that cannot be accepted under any circumstances.
These acts clearly incite hatred, exclusion, and racism and directly contradict international efforts aiming to spread the values of tolerance, moderation, and rejection of extremism, the ministry said.
The acts also undermine the necessary mutual respect for relations between peoples and countries, the ministry added.
The anti-Muslim group Pediga (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of West) desecrated a copy of Quran in front Turkish Embassy in Netherlands on Saturday.
Edwin Wagensfeld provocative act enraged many, triggering a protest. The video clip was later shared in the social media. Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We condemn in the strongest terms the despicable attacks that targeted our holy book, the Qur’an, today in front of the embassies of some member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, including our embassy in the Dutch city of The Hague.”
Over the past month, Wagensfeld desecrated copies of Quran in front embassies of Pakistan and Indonesia. Right-wing extremists have repeatedly desecrated the Quran in front of Muslim embassies in Sweden and Denmark, causing outrage among Arab and Islamic communities, says Siasat.
