Donald Trump’s running mate for vice president, JD Vance, has stirred up controversy after he said that the UK could become the first “truly Islamist country” with nuclear weapons after the Labour Party won the recent elections.

Speaking at a conference for UK Conservatives last week about nuclear proliferation, Vance said that he had been discussing with a friend which country would be the first “truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon.”

“And I was talking about what is the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon, and we were like, may be Iran, may be Pakistan already kind of counts, and then we sort of finally decided maybe it’s actually the UK, since Labour just took over,” said the Ohio Republican senator.

Reacting to the remarks made by Vance, Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said that the running nominee for the US Vice President had a history of making “fruity” comments. She stated that she doesn’t “recognise” his characterization of the UK under the Labour government.

Andrew Bowie, the shadow veterans minister, expressed his disagreement with Vance’s claim. Speaking to Times Radio, Bowie said, “I disagree with the Labour Party fundamentally on many issues, but I do not agree with the view, quite frankly. I think it’s actually quite offensive, frankly, to my colleagues in the Labour Party.”

Vance’s comments on the country becoming “Islamist” were in reference to the Labour Party’s immigration policies. In his speech, Vance attacked immigration and said, “The real threat to American democracy is that American voters keep on voting for less immigration and our politicians keep on rewarding us with more.”
