The gunman who had attempted to assassinate former US President and Republican candidate was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Mathew Crooks, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement on Sunday.

Thomas Mathew Crooks was a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He was killed by the US Secret Service Officers at the Butler rally.

The 20-year-old was killed by security officials when he opened fire at a Republican candidate which led to injuring his right ear during the election rally in Pennsylvania.

Though the Law enforcement officials had identified the suspected shooter, they were not ready to do so in publicly and stated that they hadn’t identified the motive yet.

The gunman had positioned himself 130 yards away from the stage at Butler Farm Showgrounds, where the presidential campaign was taking place. The open setting at the Butler Farm Show gave the gunman a clear line of sight to carry out his operation.

The shooting led to bloodshed, killing a person who wasn’t involved, and also critically hurting two other people at the rally.

The authorities have stated that they cannot confirm if the assault on former President Donald Trump was carried out by a “lone wolf”. “It’s too soon to determine that. We have provisionally identified one shooter, but our investigation is ongoing. We are following multiple leads, and it will be some time before we can definitively state if it was the act of a single gunman,” Lt. Col. George Bevins of the Pennsylvania State Police said to NBC.

The US security agency had earlier confirmed in a press conference that the shooting was being treated as an “assassination attempt” against the former President.
