Modi's China Visit: Major Highlights Of SCO Summit 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) leaders’ summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, 2025. The Indian PM met China’s Premier Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.

The summit meeting of the Heads of State of the 10-member SCO began on Monday, with leaders beginning a day-long deliberation to chalk out the future course of the bloc.

SCO Summit 2025: Major Highlights

  • PM Modi called for peace and constructive efforts for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
  • PM Modi spoke on the Pahalgam attack and stated that “terrorism is a collective challenge to humanity”.
  • The Member States strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. They expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the dead and the wounded. They further stated that perpetrators, organisers, and sponsors of such attacks must be brought to justice.
  • PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to work for a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” resolution of the festering boundary issue.
  • Modi and Xi pledged to work towards stabilising global trade.
  • Modi and Xi agreed that the two countries are partners in development and not rivals, noting that differences between them should not turn into disputes.
  • Modi and Xi held bilateral talks against the backdrop of Washington’s tariff tussle that has impacted almost all leading economies of the world.
  • PM Modi said, that India and Russia have always stood shoulder to shoulder even in the most difficult situations. Our close cooperation is important not only for the people of both countries but also for global peace, stability and prosperity.
  • China’s President Xi Jinping criticised the ‘bullying behaviour’ in the world order as he gathered regional leader for the SCO summit. He asked leaders to “adhere to fairness and justice… oppose Cold War mentality, camp confrontation, and bullying behaviour”.
  • Russian President said that the issure of NATO’s eastward expansion would have to be addressed for the sustainable peace in Ukraine.
