Nearly two years ago, major clashes errupted in Khartoum, where the country’s brutal civil war began. The RSF held most of the capital as well as the west of Sudan since the start of the war.
Reclaiming Khartoum is seen as a major victory for the Sudanese Armed Forces and pivotal moment in the conflict.
Notably, the Sudanese war has claimed over 15,000 lives and UN has called it one of the world’s largest displacement crises, as nearly 9 million people were forced to flee their homes. There were also warnings of genocide regarding the western region of Darfur.
