UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has conceded defeat against Labour Party candidate Keir Starmer in the country’s general elections. Based on the trends, out of the total 650 seats, the Labour Party has won more than 360 seats, while Sunak’s Conservative Party managed to secure around 80 seats. 326 seats are required for a party to secure a majority in the House of Commons.

With the Labour Party expected to win a massive majority, Keir Starmer is set to be Britain’s next prime minister. Starmer’s win will end 14 years of Conservative government. The centre-left party was in power under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown between 1997 and 2010.

Addressing his supporters, Sunak said, “I take full responsibility for the loss and understand the significant message conveyed by the British people. There is much to absorb and contemplate.” Sunak has held his seats in Richmond and Northallerton.

Describing the verdict as “thoughtful,” Sunak congratulated his opponents and added, “The Labour Party has won this general election, and I’ve called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory. Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.”

“We did it! You campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it, and now it has arrived. Change begins now,” said Starmer. Highlighting the significance of the mandate, the Labour Party candidate assured citizens that his government will prioritise “country first, party second.”

The major political parties in the race include the PM Rishi Sunak-led Conservative Party, the Labour-led by Keir Starmer, the Liberal Democrats led by Ed Davey, the Reform UK led by Nigel Farage, the Green Party co-led by Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay, and the Scottish National Party (SNP) led by John Swinney.
