“Misfortune Of The Country”: Top Wrestlers Lambast BJP For Ticket To Brij Bhushan’s Son

Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

The BJP’s nomination of Karan Bhushan Singh, the son of the sexual harassment accused Brij Bhushan Singh has stirred a weave of resentment and protest against the saffron party. The wrestling champions Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia slammed the ruling party for its ticket to the son of the former wrestler’s body chief.

The BJP had on Thursday nominated Karan Bhushan Singh as its candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj constituency. The seat is currently represented by his father Brij Bhushan, and he is also a six-time MP from the seat. The party in an apparent attempt to avoid criticism has dropped the sitting MP for the ongoing general elections due to the sexual harassment allegations by the country’s top wrestlers against the BJP leader.

However, reacting to the BJP’s decision to field Brij Bhushan’s son, Sakshi Malik today said that the “daughters of the country lost, Brij Bhushan won.”

Reminding the wrestlers’ protest braving the police assaults, Sakshi Malik said that they all put their careers at stake and slept on the streets for many days in the sun and rain. “To date, Brij Bhushan has not been arrested. We were not demanding anything, we were only demanding justice,” the Olympic medalist wrote in her X (formerly Twitter post).

Bajrang Punia, another wrestler and Olympic medalist among the protesters, highlighted that the BJP gave a ticket to Brij Bhushan’s son at a time when the party itself is surrounded by the alleged sex scandal of Prajwal Revanna, its ally Janata Dal (Secular) MP. He also noted that despite the BJP considering itself the biggest party in the world but out of its lakhs of workers, it gave a ticket to the son of the rape accused.

“During the agitations in Punjab and Haryana, people here raise a slogan, “Don’t expect anything from governments, take care of yourself.” It is the misfortune of the country that daughters who win medals will be dragged on the streets and the son of the person who sexually exploits them will be honoured by giving him a ticket,” Bajrang Punia wrote in his post on X.

The opposition parties have also criticised the BJP for its ticket to the son of Brij Bhushan.. The ticket given within the family also raises the question of dynastic politics within the saffron party, which often attacks the grand old party citing the same point.

Reacting to the nomination of Karan Bhushan Singh, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh yesterday said that the “BJP is a party with no moral compass.”

At least six wrestlers had accused the BJP MP and former chief of wrester’s body of inappropriate touch, sexual harassment and intimidation. Wrestlers including Malik, Punia and Vinesh Phogat were among the several wrestlers who protested against the BJP leader, leading to their removal from the wrester’s federation top position.
