Rajasthan: Will Govind Ram Meghwal Win Back The Bikaner Constituency For Congress?

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

The Bikaner constituency is going to witness a tight packed battle in the 2024 Lok Sabah election. Indian National Congress’ Govind Ram Meghwal is contesting against the incumbent and three term MP of Bharatiya Janata Party, Arjun Ram Meghwal. Govind Ram Meghwal was elected as a Member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2003 from Nokha of Bikaner. He was then elected from Khajuwala in 2018. Congress harbours hope in Govind to win back Bikaner from the clasp of BJP.

He was appointed as Vice President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee in 2021. He also served as the Cabinet Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Administrative Reforms and Coordination, and Statistic Policy Planning Department in the Government of Rajasthan.

Bikaner has been a bastion of Congress until 1999. In the year, the grand old party failed to secure the Lok Sabha seat. BJP made Bikaner its forte by winning four times in a row from 2004 to 2019. BJP’s Arjun Ram Meghwal has clinched victory from the seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019.

It is a nail biting election for Govind Ram Meghwal, as his opponent, Arjun Ram Meghwal has won a historic victory during the 2014 and 2019 election. During the 2014 election, Arjun won with the margin of 62.84 percent votes and in 2019, he won over the margin of 2,64,081 votes.
