BJP Targets Shakya-Mitra Vote Bank Through Durvijay Singh Shakya’s Candidacy In Badaun

BJP has played the Shakya-Maurya card in the Badaun constituency again and declared Dhurvijay Singh Shakya as their candidate in the upcoming general elections. Meanwhile, Shivpal Yadav’s son Aaditya Yadav got the ticket from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Muslim Khan from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The date of voting in the Badaun Lok Sabha constituency is on May 7, 2024.

Durvijay Singh Shakya started his political career with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and then, associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 2012, Shakya became a state backward cell coordinator and vice president of the Panchaal and Braj regions in 2014 and 2016, respectively.  BJP entrusted him with the position because under Shakya’s leadership the party has performed well in the Braj region in the civic body polls. Currently, working as a teacher in the Vishap Mandal Inter College, Shakya’s educational background is impressive as he holds BSc, BEd, MA, PG diploma and a law degree.

In 2019, Dr. Sanghmitra Maurya was the BJP candidate who secured victory from the Badaun Lok Sabha constituency. Maurya received 511352 votes (47.30%) while Samajwadi party Dharmendra Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav’s cousin, lost the polls by 18454 votes. The total voter turnout in the constituency was 57.17%.

Badaun Lok Sabha constituency comprises Gunnaur, Bisauli, Sahaswan, Bilsi and Badaun. In the last assembly elections, three constituencies were won by the SP candidates while the BJP candidates won 2. In the past, the Badaun constituency has been an SP stronghold; since 1996, Saleem Iqbal Shervani and Dharmendra Yadav remained in power consecutively.

Badaun Lok Sabha seat is a general category parliament seat which comprises Bheem Nagar district and part of Badaun district. The literacy rate here in the constituency is 43.12%. The Muslim and SC population comprise 27.61% and 16.67% of the total population in the Badaun Lok Sabha constituency.

The election commission will announce lok sabha election results on June 4, 2024.
