The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) once again gave ticket to Rajeshbhai Naranbhai Chudasama from Gujarat”s Junagadh Lok Sabha constituency for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. He has been serving as the Junagadh MP since 2014.

The party faced backlashes for fielding Chudasama. The reason for it was the death of well-known MD physician Dr Atul Chag last year. Dr Chag committed suicide at his hospital in Veraval. His suicide note carried the names of Rajesh Chudasama and his father Naran Chudasama. Dr Chag”s daughter Hitarth Chag filed a complaint claiming that both Chudasama father-son duo refused to return the money borrowed from Dr Chag.

Hitarth Chag and local Lohana community organisation protested against BJP fielding Rajesh Chudasama again. This posed a great challenge to Chudasama in retaining the seat for yet another term. However, fortunately for Chudasama, the case is resolved. Last month, Hitarth Chag announced that an amicable conclusion has been reached and added that no one should mention Dr Chag”s death in connection with politics or any other matter.

Before being elected as the MP from Junagadh, Chudasama was a Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Mangrol situated in Junagadh district. He served as the MLA from 2012 to 2014. Hailed from Chorwad, he is close to Dhirubhai Ambani, who was also from Chorwad. Chudasama also served as president of Chorwad municipality for three decades.

Junagadh has been a strong bastion of BJP since 1991. The party”s Bhavna Chikhaliya, who had served as a junior minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 2003-04, held the seat for four consecutive terms between 1991 and 1999. From 1991 onwards, only once did Congress got hold of the Junagadh seat, which was in 2004. The grant old party”s Jashu Barad defeated Chikhaliya in the election.
