Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Will Attend Narendra Modi's Oath Taking Ceremony

Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President was invited to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing in ceremony. Reportedly, Kharge will attend the ceremony as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.

The decision was reached after consultation with several INDIA bloc leaders yesterday. At the same time Bharat Raksha Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrashekhar Rao, and Trinamool Congress (TMC) will not attend the ceremony.

Kharge called the Lok Sabha election results a “decisive rejection” of the politics of divisiveness and hate. “We could not repeat our performance in states where we had previously done well in Vidhan Sabha elections and formed the government. We have to take urgent remedial measures”, he added.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s top decision making body, met on Sunday, and urged Rahul Gandhi to took up the mantle of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. While Rahul Gandhi deferred saying that he would take the decision “very soon”, his mother and former president of the party Sonia Gandhi was re-elected as the chairperson of Congress Parliamentary Party by the newly elected MPs.

Speaking to the reporters, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said, “Rahul Gandhi is the best person to lead this campaign inside the Parliament, this is what the CWC’s view was…the entire CWC feels for a better and strong vigilant Opposition, those who want to protect the Constitution also, should be safe under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi as a Leader of Opposition, this is what the CWC resolution is”.

After an extensive three hours meeting, the CWC charted a course of action, after looking into the party’s electoral performance and the roadmaps ahead. It decided to establish a committee that would evaluate the party’s performance across all states, including those under its power, where poll results fall short of expectations.

At the same time PM Modi is going to take oath for the third consecutive term. After having two tenures where BJP had a majority independently, the party will now lead a coalition government.

The oath taking ceremony will see the presence of Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Seychelles Vice-President Ahmed Afif, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
