Former opening batter and Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to be the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, a Dainik Bhaskar report said. His appointment expected to be officially announced by the BCCI in the coming days. With current head coach Rahul Dravid’s contract expiring after the ongoing T20 World Cup, Gambhir has been linked to the role for months.
A report in Dainik Bhaskar revealed that Gambhir accepted the offer from the BCCI after laying down a few demands, which the board has agreed to. A BCCI source confirmed the development, stating, “We have held talks with Gambhir to become the head coach of the Indian team. He will replace the outgoing Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup.”
One of Gambhir’s key conditions was to have the authority to select his own support staff, a demand the BCCI has accepted.
The official announcement on Gambhir’s appointment is expected later this month.
After BCCI approved Gambhir’s demands, the future of Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip who serve as the bowling and fielding coaches, respectively, is in limbo now. Vikram Rathour, the batting coach, a position he retained even after Rahul Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as head coach.
Under Gambhir’s mentorship, the Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 2024 title, bolstering his credentials as a top coaching candidate.
Recently, Gambhir expressed his desire to coach the national team during in an event, stating, “I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well.”
Gambhir, 42, was a key player in India’s T20 World Cup-winning team in 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup side.
