Germany vs Scotland at Euro 2024: At Allianz Arena in Munich, when the clock ticked to the 74th minute, there was a poignant moment that will be etched in the annals of German football history. It was a substitution. It was like an extraordinary celestial event: a dawn and sunset happening simultaneously.

The event occurred when Julian Nagelsmann, the German national football team manager and the youngest manager for the country in almost a century, decided to substitute Jamal Musiala with Thomas Müller. The stadium erupted with applause and noise – an observer would find it difficult to say for whom the crowd was cheering.

Was it for the German legend, playing his 130th game for his country and an icon in Munich due to his 16-year association with the legendary local club, or for the 21-year-old Bayern Munich sensation, who has capped 30 games for Die Mannschaft and is already a marvel in the world of football?

Some might say it was for Musiala, because of his all-round performance on the ground in the inaugural Euro Cup 2024 match, which included a goal. Germany’s number 10 troubled the Scottish defense at every opportunity and was involved in three of the four goals scored while he was on the field. He almost secured a penalty, which was denied after a VAR check.

Interestingly, Müller remained impactful in the game, despite only playing for a quarter of an hour. He was part of the build-up to Can’s goal and made some fantastic attempts to score his first goal of the Euro.

In the end, Germany secured their biggest win in Euro history with a 5-1 victory. It would have been 5-0 if Antonio Rüdiger had been a little more careful.

The game, in which Scotland was reduced to 10 after Ryan Porteous was sent off after a dangerous challenge on Gundogan, saw fabulous performances from Toni Kroos, Niclas Füllkrug, Kai Havertz and Florian Wirtz.

And like former French international Patrice Evra said in an after match analysis, “This German team is a scary team”.
